Made to measure also generally denoted as MTM or M2M, typically refers to clothing that is sewn from a standard-sized base pattern. A tailored suit is a common example of a made-to-measure garment. The fit of a made because ready-to-wear garments are constructed to fit the manufacturer’s definition of an average customer, made to measure garment is expected to be superior to that of a ready-to-wear garment, because ready-to-wear garments are constructed to fit the manufacturer’s definition of an average customer, while made-to-measure garments are constructed to fit each customer individually. Suppliers and retailers of made-to-measure clothing are focused on individual customer service and creating unique garments.
To order a made to measure (M2M) garment, the customer’s measurements are first taken by a made to measure retailer. Then a base pattern is selected that most closely corresponds to the customer’s measurements. This base pattern is altered to match the customer’s measurements. The garment is constructed from this altered pattern.

Introduction To Made To Measure
Clothing can be categorized into three types. Those are Ready to wear (RTW), Made to measure (MTM or M2M) and Bespoke fabric (for men) and/or Houte Couture(for women). RTW or often known as ‘off the rack’, is the term for factory-made clothing, sold in finished condition and in standardized sizes and it is cut and style determined by the designer. Bespoke fabric are one of the leading fabric.
The vast majority of the world’s suits are now made this way. Made to measure typically refers to clothing that is sewn by modifying a standardized base pattern to fit each customer individually. A custom suit or custom shirts is a common example of a made to measure garment. While the word bespoke itself is derived from the verb to bespeak or to “speak for something”. Specifically, it means “to give an order for it to be made”. It is a term analogous to women’s haute couture. Mass production of Ready to Wear clothing makes it available in comparatively cheaper price but it has poor fitting and the customer usually does not have control over the design, fabric, and aesthetics of the costume.
Bespoke fabric on the other hand has the superior fitting, offers the enormous opportunity to develop a truly individual garment, not just in shape but in material, detail, and finishing and it is very expensive. While made-to-measure provides an intermediate way, it is cheaper than bespoke fibre and provides better fitting than the ready to wear the garment. We can say that it has best of both worlds.
What is made to measure?
The MTM suit is like RTW, but with the benefit of an altered fit. You visit the store, but instead of taking a suit of your choice away that day, the salesman takes a few measurements and choices in cloth and style, they are sent to a worker or tailor and the result after a few weeks’ wait is a suit cut to your personal dimensions. The chest, waist, sleeve length, trouser length and trouser waist are all yours.
For e.g. Consider the individual patterns for a size 42 shirt … A MTM company takes these patterns and modifies them if your measurements are outside the range of what shirt was built to. e.g. The master tailor/house cutter will modify standardized patterns to take your body shape differences into account, like shirt length and shoulder width. Note that not all MTM companies do the same amount of modification – some have different thresholds for when to actually make adjustments to the original pattern, some skip important things like shoulder or armhole size.
Generally fitting is not done during the creation process. The garment of standard base pattern size is made and the final fitting is done depending on measurement accuracy / the preferences of the customer, there will be alterations to the final product, adding one last fitting at the end. In other words, made-to-measure suits still conform to a design template being mass-produced by a company to make its sales.
Advantages of made to measure over ready to wear:
- Made to measure offers god scope for personal expression.
- It gives better fitting than the ready to wear garment.
- Usually, these garments are more comfortable than RTW.
Disadvantages of made-to-measure over ready to wear:
- Made to measure is time-consuming and you have to wait for your garment to be finally prepared while ready to wear is off the rack and does not require any extra time and alteration.
- As RTW is produced in a mass quantity and does not require any personalization, it is cheapest.
Advantages of made-to-measure over bespoke/houte couture:
- Made-to-measure suits are cheaper than bespoke/houte couture.
- They are less time consuming than bespoke/houte couture.
Disadvantages of made to measure over bespoke/houte couture:
- Made to measure has limited possibilities of alteration and creativity while bespoke fabric has no limitation over the quality and creativity of the garment.
- Bespoke fibric offers superior fit than made to measure garments thus it provides better comfort to the wearer.
- Bespoke also offers the opportunity to develop a truly individual garment, not just in shape but in material, detail, and finishing.
Modernization in made to measure techniques:
Twenty first century technologies are defining a new era of customized and mass-customized clothing. The 3D body scanner is a fast and reliable tool for collecting measurements. Once a scan is taken (a 12-second process), it is transferred to the computer and visualized on the screen (about 45 seconds). In the next step, the software automatically locates body landmarks and generates measurements (about one minute depending on the number of measurements desired).
This method is highly computerized. In this process standard sized base patterns are pre-programmed. The body for which garment is to be made is scanned. According to body measurements relative alterations are made on the base pattern and a new pattern is produced.
The main benefit of this technique is we can observe the 3D & 2D simulations of the final garment along with different colors, texture, and fabric according to desired choices.
As this technique is totally computerized, the time required to generate a preview pattern is reduced to a considerably less amount. As customers have the freedom of choosing exact desired specifications with a friendly interface, this technique provides a customer-friendly approach. Measurements are recorded using programmed body scan, final garment produced has the ability to fulfill exact demand of the consumer.
Though there is a limited variety in a made to measure suit from which you can choose to buy from. It kills the scope of choosing from many of the available options, they have many benefits regarding comfort and style. They help you be at ease in every condition that you can put yourself in. Due to the advance developments in pattern making a time factor is being controlled too many limits. Available possibilities in creativity and fitting made-to-measure gives a personal touch to your clothing.
Therefore, you just have to give time and receive a suit that fits well and looks good.
