Marine fabrics are resistant from UV rays & hard wearing when used in oceans and seas. They can be standing remain for years & years.

- The fabric must not degrade by UV rays.
- Better abrasion resistance.
- Resistance to soiling & Good cleaning ability.
- Must be hard & strong enough.
- Very high Bursting strength.
fibers Applicable For Marine Textiles
fibers which are Non-degradable, specified strength & very less water absorbency like Nylon, Aramide, Ultrahigh Modulus. Polyethylene, Carbon fiber, PET and sometimes glass reinforced plastic is being used in marine textiles.

A Material fabricated by fabric or composed of more than one material such blocks are known as composites.
If we cover the wood with resin and fiberglass (reinforced plastic) so technically it’s composite clothes like graphene fiber, Kevlar, FRP can be reinforced with resin and laminated on the block surface to make the light weight structure consisting of the properties for the light boat hull.
The resin used for lamination is typically epoxy vinyl ester or polyester in small boat construction.
The choice normally depends on the type of process, fabric, and consideration of Stability, Strength, Ease of use, Service life, Cost & hazards.

Application Of Textile In Marine Environment
Flame retardancy is must to avoid accidents in marine textiles. Fire in “FLOATING HOTELS & CRUISE SHIPS” are mainly caused by carelessness on the part of smokers.
Hence for furnishing the carpets, sleeping rolls, blankets & Decorative articles mainly marine fabrics are preferred.
For sails purpose, we use synthetic fabric for its high strength and Antimicrobial property with minimum water absorption and less ditoriation.
The Crucial requirements for sail cloth are
- It should be lighter in weight & has good dimensional stability.
- Must have Puncture resistance and high tearing and Seam strength.
- Negligible effect of UV radiations.
- All these properties make the Marine fabric Durable.
The skirt material is a nylon coated fabric with polychloroprene/ natural rubber and compounded of oil resistance.
PVC blended with nitrile rubber was evaluated but was not satisfactory. Nylon is the best overall fiber for this application.
Polyester yarns are less affected by water, but in actual use coated polyester fabric did not last as long as nylon materials.
Polyester fabric is being used to replace some of the heavier and costly glass fiber in the composites. Sometimes Kevlar also can be used in combination to the glass fiber.
Coated fabrics are used for life rafts buoyancy tubes and canopies.
The base fabric of life rafts is generally woven polyamide with Butyl rubber or Lycra.
Twins, Nets & Ropes
Ropes and Nets made from the second generation of synthetic fibers- aramid, Vectran, High modulus polyethylene give diameters similar to steel but in one-tenth its weight.
Ropes and Nets need to stretch and absorb high-impact energies where Nylon and Polyester are the design choices.
